TILLSIDE are the early pacesetters in the SG Wealth Management Northumberland Premier League after an opening-day win at Bates Cottages.

Gavin Turnbull's unbeaten 79 fired them to an eight-wicket win, chasing just 135 after a struggling home side saw just three players reach double figures.

Cameron McGregor and Alan Hindmarsh both took three wickets apiece before opening bat Turnbull steered the ship safely home with plenty to spare.

The upshot of it all was that five batting and bowling points saw Tillside take a one-point lead over Warkworth in the early-season standings, with the weather disrupting a number of games.

Mid-afternoon thunderstorms forced the abandonment of three matches, with Berwick's home tie against Corbridge, Bedlington's trip to Stocksfield and Blagdon Park's match with Clara Vale all going down as draws.

Berwick were 92 for eight, chasing Corbridge's 160, when the rain finally took hold, while Blagdon were 119 for two in pursuit of 235.

Figures of five for 21 from Stocksfield's Andy Ward saw them earn a share of the points against Bedlington, with the Terriers all out for 183. …
