MILLIONS of extra dollars are urgently needed to help fix the health of the Richmond River estuary, according to Ballina mayor Phillip Silver.

He said the Coastal Zone Management Plan for the Richmond River Estuary a recently released by the Richmond River County Council a was a good start.

But he said that there was a aserious shortfalla in the funding.

The plan identifies $16 million to be spent over a 10-year period.

aI am very disappointed,a Cr Silver said.

aWe have not quite sorted out who will do that work and we definitely have not sorted out how it will be funded.

aIt is a big, gaping hole.

aIt's been six years (finalising the plan) a[degrees] and I think it's a very good plan, but it's just the start.
