NO MATTER what your child's ability level or age, once they start school, homework becomes a fact of life.

Homework is beneficial to children, not just for their scholastic learning but also for teaching them self-discipline, dedication, responsibility and to show them that hard work and perseverance will produce results.

As most parents know, study and homework can often be the cause of much frustration and tension in the home.

These tips can help your child learn good study habits.

1. Allow your child time to unwind

Traditionally parents want their children to start their homework as soon as they get home from school, but many teachers and tutors advise that this is not always the best route.

Like any full-time job, school can be stressful and demanding, so allow your child time to relax and unwind before starting their evening studies. Allocate a time so your child knows how long they have for the unwinding.

2. Choose an appropriate place to study

To allow your child to achieve the best results, ensure they have an appropriate place to do their homework a one with few distractions. Make sure their homework place is designated specifically for homework so they don't have to be moved or interrupted.

A good study area should:

Be comfortable, with enough room for the materials needed.

Have good lighting.

Be away from distractions such as television.

Stocked with the materials your child will need, to avoid a lot of unnecessary wandering around the house looking for materials.

3. Set a homework agenda

Spend five minutes with your child before they commence their homework and discuss what needs to be done so you can work out an agenda. In some instances, it may be worthwhile to set timeframes for particular tasks.
