FIVE Lamps Garage moved into contention for honours in the first division of the Middlesbrough and District Table Tennis League last week when they defeated Ormesby A by 10-0 with hat-tricks from Mark Walpole, Steve Baines and Steve Cooper.

Alex Garlick provided most of the opposition for Ormesby A and was beaten narrowly by Cooper at 13-11 in the decider. This result takes Five Lamps to within two points of the current leaders, Ormesby C, with the Garage team having a match in hand.

However, the Championship is far from decided as Ormesby D in particular are in strong contention, trailing the leaders by 14 points but with four games in hand. All matches should be completed within the next week.

Also in the first division, lower half, Kader Nomads A stamped their authority on the section with a 9-1 victory over their own B team.

Craig Dring and Kevin Bell were both unbeaten whilst Robert Evans replied for Kader B with a straight sets victory over Brian Birbeck.

In the second division Ormesby F defeated the team in second place, North East Tyres B, by six sets to four.

The star of the match was Dave Ashwell who scored a hat-trick for Ormesby F. Colin Charity was the best player on display for North East Tyres, winning two of his sets.

The closest match was Charity's win over Neil Clerkin by 11-7 in the decider.

This result gives Ormesby F the title with North East Tyres B trailing 18 points behind with just one match to play.

The Middlesbrough Table Tennis Championships, which are sponsored by Acklam Car Company, Beaumont Accountancy, North East Tyres and Exhausts and Tees Sport, are taking place this weekend at the Ormesby Club.

The Junior and Handicap competition will take place on Saturday with the Open and Division Singles, Veterans and Doubles on Sunday.

Play starts at 9am on each day and spectators are welcome.
