BYRON Bay surfer Ben Dickens is so at home at Wategos Beach he even brings his dog Wilbur along with him to catch a few waves.

aHe loves coming out and paddling with me and I even get him to stand up on the waves,a Dickens said.

With this sort of local knowledge, Dickens toasted success in yesterday's open nine-inch boardriders' final at the Byron Bay Malibu Classic.

Dickens saw off challenges from Coolangatta's Matt Aldridge and the small waves in the final to break through for his first Byron Bay title in his fourth attempt.

aI'm very happy to win at home a I did it finally,a he said.

aThe conditions were really tricky so it was pretty much you versus the ocean. I was in a high-class field a Matty is an unbelievable surfer.

aI was beaten in the 2009 opens final so it's a great feeling to break through.a

Dickens loved the laid-back nature of this year's Byron Bay meet.
