Pardew Bemoans Cheik's Bookings; Tiot Will Be Told to Improve Discipline

CHELSEA'S Old Trafford defeat has spared Alan Pardew a tricky decision - but it will not save Cheik Tiot from his manager's wrath.

Tiot picked up his fifth booking in as many matches during Saturday's 2-1 victory over Birmingham City.

Thanks to Manchester United's win yesterday, it may have ended the Ivorian's season.

Pardew is unlikely to risk the combative midfielder against Chelsea or West Bromwich Albion, knowing a caution will take him to 15 for the campaign, incurring his fourth Newcastle United suspension.

What Pardew feared was a Chelsea win which would have left him in a quandary at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

"He would miss three games at the beginning of next season and he is very important to the team," said Pardew, a friend of Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson. "Had Chelsea won I would have had a commitment to field my strongest team."

While Chelsea's defeat does not guarantee Manchester United a record 19th league title, it would take a massive and unexpected collapse from the holders to bring it about. The Red Devils would have to lose both their remaining games and Chelsea win theirs.

Since sitting out the matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa after accumulating ten bookings, and despite the warnings of his manager, Tiot has been cautioned in every match since, including in added time on Saturday for fouling Matt Derbyshire. He earlier escaped punishment for what some Birmingham players interpreted as a stamp on Barry Ferguson. Tiot has equalled the Premier League record set by Robbie Savage, who retired Cheik bookings have got to stop from football on the same day. He was also sent off in this season's FA Cup, at Stevenage. It is a disciplinary record his manager is not happy with. "I don't think he is like Robbie Savage," Pardew said. …
