Budget Gives Hope for Hospital Upgrade; Under-Spent Funds Will Go into New Round: Swan

LAST night's budget gives Lismore Base Hospital a second chance at securing Federal funding for its critically needed Stage Three upgrade, Page MP Janelle Saffin has said.

Budget papers released by Treasurer Wayne Swan last night revealed the Commonwealth's Health and Hospitals Fund hadunder-spent by $475 million. That money would now go into a second round for the fund.

Lismore Base Hospital's Stage Three upgrade missed out on millions of dollars of Commonwealth spending after the former NSW Labor Health Minister Carmel Tebbutt failed to include the hospital upgrade on a list of priority projects for the Federal Government.

The new Coalition State Gov- ernment has committed to updating plans for the upgrade.

In the weeks before the election, then Shadow Health Minister a now the NSW Health Minister a Jillian Skinner agreed the Lismore Base upgrade was one of NSW's top health priorities.

However, she was unable toguarantee the upgrade would be built within the Coalition's first term unless unexpected riches were found in NSW Treasury. …
