Bruce Is Left with a Tinge of Regret; Black Cats End Season with Tinge of Regret

WHAT might have been always leaves a queasy feeling after a campaign of underachievement - no one knows this better than Steve Bruce as Sunderland prepare for their final home game of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

We never thought we'd be in that situation, don't think anyone did but, thankfully, we've won two of the last three, which has got us moving again and just at the right time as well. "But it still doesn't mask over the problems we've got, although it's not easy to go to Bolton with our problems and to play the way we did was very pleasing, it showed a few people up.

"I've never accused them of not having a bit of fight. We're playing in the best league in the world and when you're without six or seven of your top players week in, week out then you're up against it. But I know for a fact we could have been five or six points better off than we are now and if we had (picked up those extra points), we'd have cemented our place in the top ten. "And that's the frustration for me; for six seven months we played some fantastic football and got some great results, but for whatever reason after January we've hit a brick wall. …
