Unearthing Family History; Funeral Directors Gregson and Weight Have Joined Forces with Caloundra Family History Research to Compile a Database of Three Decades of Burial Records on the Coast

SEARCHING out your family history just got easier thanks to a collaboration between Caloundra Family History Research Inc and Gregson and Weight Funeral Directors.

Together, they have compiled an indexing system that contains all the burial records of all funerals conducted by Gregson and Weight Funeral Directors between 1971 and 2010 on one CD.

There are more than 20,000 records on the CD, including the name, age, date of death and where each person is buried, whether it is on the Sunshine Coast, interstate or overseas, as well as the addresses of the cemeteries and crematoriums mentioned in the index.

Caloundra Family History Research vice-president Valerie Thornton said the project would make records far more accessible: aIt's great news for local historians and anyone interested in researching family history.a

The index took 16 months to compile and will allow people to independently access the records rather than having to go through the funeral home.

Royce Gregson, from Gregson and Weight Funeral Directors, said community members often contacted the business about their great-grandfather or details of a family burial.

Before the index was compiled, all the records were kept on paper in numerous files.

aI think there's been a real surge of interest in family history,a Royce said.
