REDCAR MP Ian Swales has criticised Ensus bosses for not seeking political help as they fought a losing battle to stop the factory from closing.

On Thursday, Ensus chief executive Peter Sopp confirmed the plant would be closed for as long as four months. The site, which has also been battling an odour problem affecting many residents, blames the EU for not enforcing new rules that would have stopped US imports undercutting its market.

Mr Swales said: "I am very disappointed that Ensus got this far without letting the politicians know about it.

"The situation they find themselves in needs to be addressed through political change. This is an international business and the rules have to be set internationally. I understand the chief exec of Ensus spoke to a civil servant a month ago, but I am not aware of that communication.

"But I am pleased to see that Ensus will keep working and regard this as a temporary setback. …
