St. Johns Man Gets Life for Killing Repo Man; Fatal Shooting Took Place over a $400 Truck Debt

ST. AUGUSTINE A St. Johns County man who killed a tow truck driver and wounded the driver's partner over a $400 truck debt was sentenced to life in prison Thursday.

Jesse Elorde Ramirez, 51, who told the judge he was married and a sous chef, said "I'm sorry" for the death of Wilfred Rivera, 48, and shooting of Delbert Charles Power Jr., 31, on March 2.

Rivera and Power had gone to Ramirez' home on Florida 16 to repossess a truck after contacting him that afternoon to say they were coming.

"The guy just came out shooting," said Power, who was at the sentencing and said he was shot seven times, is unable to work and has nightmares from the incident.

Rivera was his boss and best friend, Power said.

"He paid for my wedding," he said. "We worked 20 hours a day and slept four."

Members of Rivera's family sobbed when the sentence was read. His wife declined to comment.

In a letter she wrote to Ramirez that was read in the courtroom, Ileana Rivera blamed his "selfish greed to retain a vehicle" as the drive to murder "an innocent, humble, dear man who was only doing a job. …
