BARACK and Michelle Obama forged a special relationship with Prince William and his wife Kate at Buckingham Palace today.

Arriving for a three-day State visit, America's First Couple struck up an immediate rapport with the young newly-weds, who are just back from honeymoon.

Mrs Obama beamed as she met a smiling Duchess of Cambridge, while the President chatted amiably with the future king.

Earlier the visitors were given a warm welcome on the steps of the palace by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. The American couple towered over their royal hosts.

Meanwhile the Obama luggage was being carried into the same bedroom suite in the Palace that William and Kate enjoyed on their wedding night four weeks ago.

After the pomp and ceremony of the formal welcome, President Obama's trip was being dominated by talks on the conflicts in Afghanistan, where US and British soldiers are fighting side-by-side, and Libya, whose capital was bombarded last night in some of the heaviest Nato raids yet.

While the President and the Prime Minister declared their countries had an "essential relationship", they also stressed their determination to use military force to defend people campaigning for democracy.

"We will not stand by as their aspirations get crushed in a hail of bombs, bullets and mortar fire," the two leaders wrote in a joint article. "We are reluctant to use force, but when our interests and values come together, we know we have a responsibility to act."

This afternoon, President Obama was laying a wreath at Westminster Abbey in honour of the war dead. Then he was heading for Downing Street to meet David Cameron before tomorrow's full morning of bilateral talks.

The President was also fitting in meetings with Labour leader Ed Miliband at the palace but Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg will see him during the formal talks. The royal family made up for the royal wedding snub to Gordon Brown and Tony Blair. …
