Sports Academic to Receive US Honour; Distinguished Achievement Is Recognised

A NORTH East expert is to be rewarded next week for the international impact of his research into sports science and medicine.

Dr Glyn Howatson, Northumbria University's associate director for sport research, will travel to the United States to present research in Denver, Colorado, and be awarded a Fellowship from the American College of Sports Medicine. The Fellowship is given in recognition of distinguished professional achievements and service in the field of exercise science and sports medicine. There are few Fellows outside the United States and Dr Howatson's Fellowship acknowledges his collective research contributions and his work in applied sport and exercise science and medicine.

He said: "I am absolutely delighted to be recognised for my work.

"Receiving Fellowship from the college is a real honour in our discipline.

"I am thrilled that the research we are doing is having a meaningful impact on the wider community, not just in the United Kingdom, but also internationally. "It is also testament to the world-class facilities that support our work here at Northumbria and the resulting research output we are producing in the Sport and Exercise Science department."

Since joining Northumbria University's School of Life Sciences in 2009, Dr Howatson has been involved in several key studies. …
