POTTSVILLE Panthers showed they would be major players during the big end-of-season fixtures by holding the powerful Goonellabah Hornets to a 1-1 draw on home turf at Koala Beach Field on Saturday.

The draw leaves the Panthers in outright second place on 12 points, two points in arrears of Richmond Rovers who smacked Lismore Workers 5-1 in a local derby on Saturday.

With just one game remaining before the completion of the first round, the Panthers go into next week's clash full of confidence as they do battle with Lismore Thistles down in Lismore.

aIf we can grab a win down there, that will have us perfectly placed for the charge home,a Panthers captain-coach David Lonie said.

Lonie was a mightily pleased man at game's end on Saturday, delighted with the performances put in by his pride.

aThe Hornets set the benchmark in this competition and for us to hold them to draw augers well for our premiership prospects this season,a he said. …
