Rampant Drug Use and Addictions Causing Problems within Mackay

DRUG use happens every weekend at regular nightspots in Mackay with people aged 18 to 30 years old being the most commonly treated for drug addiction and habits.

With more than 1700 drug related offences recorded in one year alone, there's an ongoing battle to reduce the social problems that are created through drug abuse.

Rian Thompson and Sam Gerovich said it was apparent that drug use was creating unsocial behaviour on weekends among young people.

They believe employers, particularly those in the mining industry, were trying to combat the growing problem with compulsory drug testing.

C[pounds sterling]I haven't been out in Mackay yet but I would say there are some people around here who would splurge on drugs instead of alcohol over the weekend,C[yen] Mr Gerovich said.

Drug Awareness Rehabilitation and Management (ARM) in Mackay treats clients of all ages, but executive director Dr Dennis Young said most presenting with drug habits fell within the ages of 18 to 30 years. …
