Youngsters Will Be Given Chance to Shine; MCCA KO TROPHY

NORTHUMBERLAND will treat this weekend's Knockout Trophy clash with Staffordshire as a final warm-up for their Minor Counties League campaign, writes JAMES HUNTER.

Last weekend's eight-wicket defeat against Cumberland put paid to any chance Northumberland had of progressing in the one-day competition, rendering tomorrow's game a dead rubber - especially as Staffordshire find themselves in a similar situation.

But rather than lament their misfortunes in the competition, Northumberland will use tomorrow's game at Leek to give some youngsters from their development team an outing. And team manager Bill Graham says a victory would give his side an important confidence boost ahead of next weekend's opening league game against Norfolk at Osborne Avenue.

Graham said: "Losing against Cumberland means we can't go any further in the Trophy, because we needed to win that one and Sunday's game to stand any chance.

"So, as far as the Trophy goes, you could say this game is irrelevant - but we can't think of it like that. …
