Pilot Is Shaken after Emergency Landing

CRASH investigators are today carrying out a probe into a near-miss at Newcastle Airport.

Emergency services were alerted after the pilot of light aircraft lost control while landing and crashed.

The drama unfolded at around 7.40pm last night and the airport was closed for 15 minutes while the emergency was dealt with, although both incoming and departing passengers faced no delays. The pilot was shaken and was taken to hospital with minor cuts and bruises.

Meanwhile, three arriving aircraft had to circle in the skies above the airfield while managers assessed the situation.

Workers from the airfield checked the Cherokee plane over after it came to a halt on a grass verge after coming off the runway.

Five members of staff wearing high-visible clothing carried out assessments to identify the cause of the incident, while the plane sat on rough grass the end of the runway. A Newcastle airport spokeswoman said: "The Cherokee plane left the runway on landing as it landed at Newcastle Airport.

"The pilot was shaken but uninjured and was taken to hospital with a few minor cuts and bruises. The front tyre of the plane had burst.

"The runway was closed for 15 minutes and was fully operational after that time.

"The accident investigation unit were informed and an internal investigation will take place."

A police spokeswoman said: "Police received reports from air traffic control of a light aircraft having lost control while landing at around 7.40pm.

"Police attended the scene where the aircraft had landed off the runway on near-by grass. The occupant of the aircraft was uninjured and the airport was closed for a short period of time but there was no adverse impact on the travelling public."
