HIS mates labelled him un-Australian, a turn coat.

But for Grafton Jail corrective services officer Scott Powell he's $4000 better off in the pocket.

Powell decided to place a $20 sports multi bet at the local TAB last year and in doing so committed the cardinal sin as an Aussie sports lover. He backed England to win the Ashes and the Kiwi's to beat Australia in rugby league.

aMy mates think I'm un-Australian but the odds were too good to pass up,a Powell told the Daily Examiner last week.

aAustralia was at really short odds to beat the Kiwis in the Four Nations and I didn't think the cricketers were going to win the Ashes.

aThe Aussies were going down hill in cricket and got smashed by the Poms.a

For Powell the $3.50 odds he received if Barcelona won the Champions League was the icing on the cake.

aI knew I had the other two legs up but I had to wait a long time to see if Barcelona won,a Powell recalls. …
