RUNNING: Two years ago Cameron Owens weighed 176kg and could barely walk, let alone run.

Today he's down to just over 100kg, and last weekend was one of about 300 runners competing in the Balance Podiatry 8km event, part of the BMA Mackay Marina Run.

It's an amazing turnaround for Owens, 21, who said yesterday he underwent a gastrectomy to reduce the size of his stomach at Rockhampton in October 2009.

aThey cut part of the stomach out,a he said.

aThat, and plenty of exercise, healthy eating and looking after myself has got me where I am today.

aI hit the gym for two-and-a-half to three hours a day and I eat the right things a that helps me along.a

Owens said he had had family members who also had health issues, and decided at 176kg that he had to do something about his future.

Now 74 kg lighter, his running ability was highlighted when he placed 48th in the 8km run in a time of 48 minutes and 9 seconds, 49 seconds off his personal best. …
