YOUNGSTER Adam Martin rode off with the honours at Barnesbury Cycling Club's Ballantyne Memorial Trophy Road Race.

The Cestrians Cycles RT rider completed the 53-mile race at Cambo, Northumberland, in two hours and 23 minutes.

He finished four seconds ahead of Infinity Cycles' John Cann, with GS Metro's Michael Mallen 10 seconds behind in third.

Mallen attacked the bunch on the first climb on the circuit and was joined two miles later by Cann, who shared the work holding off the bunch.

Earlier the bunch had let a break of 10 riders clear and they held a gap of 30 seconds or so until there was a comingtogether. Cann and Mallen battled up Bilsmoor, but on the climb at Winters Gibbet the pair were pulled back by Martin.

He caught them at the top by the scaffold, and the now threestrong escape worked together to hold off the chasing peloton.

At the finish the logical winner should have been Mallen or Cann, who should have attacked his companions on the last rise with one kilometre to go. …
