THE mothers of a young couple who died in a horrific traffic crash on the Bruce Hwy because of a tailgating truck driver were left feeling numb when the inquest into the deaths reached a conclusion this week.

Coroner Maxine Baldwin said Rachel Purdy and Cory Whitmore's deaths were caused by a tailgating truck driver who lost control of his vehicle when forced to brake suddenly.

He died at the scene as well.

The mums, Marion Purdy and Kathy Whitmore, will never stop grieving but say they hope the deaths of their adult children will bring about changes in driver behaviour.

The inquest into the deaths of six people, who died in three separate traffic crashes within a 15km stretch of the Bruce Hwy, took six days spanning a couple of months, and more than a year for the findings to be released.

The coroner was to decide whether the condition of the road contributed to the fatalies and determine the causes of each death. It was found that on each occasion the road was up to standard and had suitable skid resistance. It was defective vehicles and driver error that contributed. …
