BRIAN Pitt is the first to admit the word C[pounds sterling]heroC[yen] is a bit extreme but then again he is used to some pretty extreme circumstances.

The Calliope SES group leader was one of numerous local residents recognised for their outstanding community initiative, bravery, courage, resilience and strength during the greatest natural disasters in Queensland's history.

They were some of the 100-plus individuals from the Rockhampton and Theodore regions who were presented with a medal while attending the Queensland Disasters Heroes Recognition Awards Ceremony in Rockhampton on Monday night.

Mr Pitt was nominated by the Queensland Police Service and Member for Gladstone Liz Cunningham for his part in the rescue of three German backpackers, who became stranded on Kroombit Tops on Christmas Day.

He was part of a four-man team that was deployed to rescue the backpackers after they drove their four-wheel-drive into the national park on Christmas Day and became stuck on an embankment on their way out. …
