Our Leaders Fail Asylum Seekers

FEDERAL Labor's win in 2007 was a moment of hope for those who objected to the awful treatment given to asylum seekers under the Howard Government a all in the name of scaring off other potential arrivals.

The treatment and demonisation of human beings who, in acts of desperation, risked their lives and the lives of family members in the hope of reaching the safety of Australia was utterly heartbreaking.

There was the Tampa Affair and the Government's failed effort to keep 438 Afghan men, women and children, from reaching Australian waters.

There was the achildren overboarda affair, where PM John Howard, Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock and others falsely accused asylum seekers of throwing their kids into the ocean in an attempt to force our Navy to rescue them.

There was Amanda Vanstone's slashing of Australia's immigration zone, to make it harder for the poor and the desperate to claim Asylum; there was Mr Ruddock's claim asylum seekers were really just afinanciala refugees, looking for wealth; there was the Pacific Solution and Nauru; there were asylum seekers held for years, sewing their lips together and slowly losing their minds in isolation and uncertainty. …
