PRINCESS Malaika defied the bookmakers and raced home to win the 40th Galaxy Final ahead of Big Bunga in 23.57 seconds on a heavy track.

Tony Hancock's Princess Malaika ran from box five and was involved in a titanic battle with the favourite, Big Bunga, for Jason Mackay, right from the jump, which delighted the big crowd at Border Park.

They ran head to head for most of the 420m, but Princess Malaika took the lead at the top turn and despite the best efforts from Big Bunga, was too strong in the run home.

Stylish Daymo, for Julie Edmondson, was camped behind the leaders the whole way and was rewarded with third place.

Border Park secretary Stephen McGrath said it was a great training feat from Casino's Hancock.

Pretty Malaika has nine wins and two places from 13 starts at Border Park.

Hancock set Princess Malaika for the Galaxy three months ago and was extremely happy, but still very humble, his dog was the fastest. …
