NAMBUCCA Heads has a new national champion.

Lawn bowler Dot Secomb paired with South Australian Kath Murrell to claim a gold medal in the B2 women's pairs at the Vision Impaired and Blind Bowlers National Championships at Rosehill Bowls Club.

Bowling for the first time with the assistance of new direction guide Julie Carr, from West Coffs, Dot was undeterred in her quest for the Bob Farmer Memorial Shield for the B2 pairs. She became the first New South Wales bowler to break the dominance of Queensland and Victoria.

Nambucca publicist Brenda Fane said Dot also combined with Richard Gumbleton, of Grafton, to win a silver medal in the B4 open mixed pairs.

aThis is an achievement, as Dot's classification of B2 means she was at a considerable disadvantage, as she has far less sight than those in the B4 category,a Brenda said.

aAlthough Dot has been bowling for some 20 years at Nambucca Heads Bowling Club, she only started in the sport after suddenly losing her eyesight to haemorrhaging of her retinas. …
