WHAT possible thread could link Yamba Surf Club life member Cliff Lowien, Egyptologist Sir Grafton Elliott Smith, founding editor of the South China Morning Post Tse Tsan-tai, The Australian Lighthorse, Maclean's professional fisherman Alan Ford, former Olympic rower David Cameron and the world heritage Australian Gondwana Rainforests?

They all share the experience of Australia's largest coastal river catchment, the Clarence.

Like DNA molecules, these few people and the surrounding environment have millions of years of stored information.

I have just started a two-year project to document and record some of the Clarence's C[pounds sterling]DNAC[yen] before it is lost.

While it is impossible to cover it all, I will try to record some stories that will hopefully inspire others to educate themselves about the importance of this glorious river system.

I love sorting fact from myth and discovering the untold and unpublished stories of the Clarence River. …
