MAYBE it's a sign of the times.

Street signs across Mackay are being kidnapped, just disappearing without a trace.

Others are being vandalised beyond recognition, making it difficult for people to find their way around.

Worse still, the problem is costing ratepayers a small fortune.

Mackay Regional Council wants it to stop and is encouraging people to report street sign theft or vandalism to police. It's also encouraging residents who notice street signs are missing or damaged to let them know, so they can replace them.

The call comes after an increase in the number of street signs stolen and vandalised around the Mackay region.

Roads and Infrastructure portfolio councillor Kevin Casey said it was imperative that the city have street signs, saying they ensured community safety and helped emergency services and visitors find their way around.
