CHINA is known for copying just about everything, from DVDs to cars, but a plan to copy an entire Austrian town has residents up in arms.

The Austrian Independant reports that Chinese engineers and architects have caused a stir in the stunning 800-person lakeside hamlet of Hallstatt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It seems the Chinese want to recreate Hallstatt in Guangdong province in China. However, they came and studied the town without telling any locals their plans to build a Chinese replica.

A US man who dropped out of college just short of graduation in 1932 has earned his degree at the age of 99.

Leo Plass, of Redmond, has now received his diploma from Eastern Oregon University in La Grande. He said he was less than one semester away from graduating from what was then called Eastern Oregon Normal School and starting a career as a teacher.

But Plass said it was the Depression, and a teaching salary of $US80 ($A76) a month would not cut it. So when a friend offered him a spot in a logging outfit at $US150 ($A143) a month, Mr Plass says he could not pass it up. Co PA

But they're not the first GPS users to get confused and end up stuck, or worse.
