Waste Plant in the Pipeline; Firm Looks at North East for Site

A NATIONAL waste management company is considering plans to develop a site on Tyneside, it has been revealed.

Peel Environmental has identified 11 UK Coal locations across northern England and the Midlands which could be used to process waste.

The Wardley disposal point, in Gateshead, is on the list for the new project.

Currently it is used to transport opencast coal to power stations and other industrial users. But Myles Kitcher, director of Peel Environmental, said: "We are at the very earliest stages of the process and it is important to make clear that no firm decision has been made to progress any scheme on any site."

He added that the locations all present "great opportunities" for the development of waste facilities.

The company still has to develop the schemes and put them through the formal planning process before any work can begin.

Mr Kitcher said: "We are committed to ensuring that full and effective consultation with the local community is carried out for any schemes. …
