Upgrade Project Gets under Way at Brackridge Park

The work that started this week at Brackridge Park will produce a better site for players, fans and especially the disabled. As part of a city initiative to upgrade parks and make them compliant with the American with Disabilities Act, Brackridge will have new bleachers, a concession stand and restroom facility, picnic and playground area, and new security fencing and lighting.

Brackridge, at 8650 Newton Road, is primarily used by the Jacksonville Jaguars Soccer Club, a travel club organization for youths age 11-18.

"It's going to be a showcase soccer facility," said Russell Smith, president of the Jaguars Club. "Our teams deserve to be able to play at a facility that's among the best in the county. We're excited that our players have stuck with us, knowing this was coming. We're going to be able to enjoy the reward of our hard work."

The project has taken two years to get under way. Because the park is built on a landfill, organizing the construction and getting permits was involved. Many of the facilities are from the 1960s, and outdated in accessibility. That will improve dramatically. The club is also raising money to resod the soccer fields once the city work is done and the irrigation systems are functioning again.

The work was to have started this week and be finished in time for the Jaguars' soccer season to start in August.

WOODLAND ACRES BEGINS FOOTBALL, CHEER

There's another football and cheer option for youths in the Arlington area, one that organizers hope will have a positive effect on them.

The Woodland Acres Athletic Alliance is starting play this fall. It's open to boys and girls ages 5-14, and practices on the field behind Woodland Acres Elementary School at 328 Bowlan St. N. Wendall Duncan and other volunteers started the organization, which is a member of American Youth Football. …
