Doctor Risked Lives in the Floodwaters

A DOCTOR who risked the lives of his son, rescue workers and himself when he drove through raging floodwaters in December has lost his licence for two months.

Tasawar Aslam, 44, of North Bundaberg, ignored road closed signs on Targo St about 7.30pm on December 27, driving his Toyota LandCruiser through the fast-flowing water.

The doctor continued to drive until his car bonnet was underwater and the engine stalled.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Barry Stevens yesterday told Bundaberg Magistrates Court the force of the water was so immense the car was turned 180 degrees.

Aslam's 15-year-old son was a passenger in the vehicle at the time and both he and his father called 000.

The operator instructed them to wait on the roof until help came.

Emergency workers, including swift-water rescuers, saved the pair.

Sgt Stevens said Aslam told police he thought the road closed signs were for roadworks but when he saw the water, he continued to drive. …
