'Sweet 16' Rita and Dance Beau Jack Quick-Step through 60 Years

DIAMOND wedding couple Jack and Rita Ruddy are really in step.

For Jack, 85, and Rita, 77, of Milton Street, Saltburn, met on a dance floor at Loftus and kept toe tapping all their lives - until about five years ago, when Jack's ill health caused a halt.

Jack was born in North Skelton in 1925 and Rita in Skinningrove in 1933.

They met at a dance at Loftus town hall in 1949, when Jack was 25 and Rita was sweet 16.

Rita said: "It was love at first sight! My family said I was too young, but we're still together after 60 years, so I reckon I was right."

Jack left the former Stanghow Lane School aged 14 and became a surface worker at the North Skelton ironstone mine.

The couple married at Guisborough Register Office on June 9, 1951.

During the war, Jack joined the Green Howards and was stationed in the UK.

After the war, Rita was a comptometer operator at Hintons in Middlesbrough. The machine was a key-driven mechanical calculator. …
