SUNSHINE Coast Council needs to show flexibility and introduce an interim planning model so work can begin on the long-awaited Sippy Downs Town Centre development.

Frazer Dean, the Urban Development Institute of Australia's Sunshine Coast president, said yesterday that allowing commercial components of the major Woolworths project to be built first would allow it to evolve over time.

Mr Dean said he had put his proposal a based on feedback from developers a to senior council officers, but admitted their reaction was not positive.

Of chief concern to the council, he said, was a fear the development's residential component would not happen if they alet them off the hook building them straight awaya.

aGet the commercial projects off the ground first. Let the town centre start establishing itself,a Mr Dean said.

The future of the project was thrown into jeopardy last week when the council rejected Woolworths' $100 million development application. …
