Nurses Call on Health Minister to Pay a Visit

NORTHERN RIVERS nurses want NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner to visit Lismore Base Hospital to talk to staff about recent cuts they believe are affecting services.

And they have called on the public to support their campaign.

The NSW Nurses Association's Gil Wilson said the cutbacks had reduced the nurses' capacity to provide adequate care and meet the needs of the local area.

Mr Wilson cited the recent axing of the night duty nurse from the operating theatre of Lismore Base Hospital, saying it had a negative impact on the hospital's response time to after-hours surgical emergencies, particularly caesarean sections.

Other concerning cuts include the plan to replace midwives with less-qualified enrolled nurses in the maternity unit; staff shortages in the Cancer Care unit restricting the utilisation of existing diagnostic equipment and treatment areas; and the redevelopment of the emergency department so that it can meet the demands of the local area. …
