A MAN walking naked along a popular cycle track and footpath in broad daylight was arrested after a senior detective cycled past him.

The bare-faced, and bare everything else, hiker was wearing nothing more than a rucksack on his back and was walking towards the popular commuter village of Lanchester, County Durham, from the direction of Knitsley shortly before 1pm on Sunday.

At the time the area was busy with dog walkers, horse riders, cyclists and families enjoying the warm weather on the former railway path which is a well-used route between Consett and Durham.

One of the cyclists using it while off-duty on Sunday was Detective Inspector Geoff Smith from Durham Police, who used his mobile phone to inform uniformed officers what he had seen when he reached Newbiggen Lane in Lanchester, a point where the cycle track crosses the road.

Within minutes, two patrol cars containing three officers had arrived and the hapless walker was arrested as he approached Lanchester, even as he tried desperately to cover his private parts by taking his shorts out of his rucksack as he saw the police uniforms ahead of him. …
