I'm planning a trip soon with a car full of Boy Scouts. I'm planning to instill in them the most important of all Guy Laws: Never, ever, ever stop to ask for directions.

We'll have a GPS in the car, of course. But, as I learned on last year's Boy Scout trip, he who hits the road with a GPS and no map is a fool.

So I got to thinking about how it was done in the old days, back when the pioneers were traveling the Oregon Trail in their Vista Cruiser station wagons, with the young'uns in the wayback seat, facing backward and asking "are we there yet?" Oh yeah, I remembered, AAA, that organization I pay an annual fee to in case I break down on the side of the road. …
