Burning Question as Giants Battle It out for the Top Spot

WE ALL know who the big hitters of North East business are - the Sages. the Nissans, the Bellways the transport giants Go-Ahead and Arriva.

But the burning question is: which among them will actually top the North East Top 200 companies table this year? The year under question, up to June 17, has been a topsy turvy one as any post-recession fight for recovery invariably brings. Some companies in this year's reckoning have dropped more than 50 places down the list. Some, even less fortunate, are out of the list altogether.

Some sectors do better than others. Even within a sector smaller companies can sometimes recover more quickly than bigger ones. So many imponderables come into the reckoning in reviving sales and hacking overheads.

State scrappage support for car owners, for example. To what extent did that help individual parts manufacturers and dealers - and to what extent did it give the automotives sector an advantage over others in getting turnover back up again? …
