THE secretary of the Federal Treasury Martin Parkinson gave the very distinct impression this week he didn't like the idea that politicians had the audacity to question foreign investment in Australia.

During the week an unusual alliance of politicians a the Greens, independent Nick Xenophon and Barnaby Joyce from the Nationals a questioned the merit of allowing the sale of large tracts of farming land to Chinese companies, but Mr Parkinson advised they needed to be cautious.

They probably each had different reasons, but their concerns were valid.

Mr Parkinson said: aOnce we get into the world of discouraging capital from any source, you know it's got to be a legitimate source, but once we're in the world of discouraging capital to come to Australia we are actually making a deliberate decision to lower our own potential wealth.a

Mr Parkinson, I don't doubt your economic credentials, but you need to be aware wealth is about more than money. …
