MICK QUINN feels Newcastle United must look outside the four walls of St James' Park to find the next bearer of the No 9 shirt.

The iconic shirt has yet to be filled since the departure of Andy Carroll to Liverpool in January and Quinn believes there is concern growing among Magpie supporters.

With Alan Pardew's striker search so far only delivering Senegal international Demba Ba, Quinn reckons there is a lack of quality in the transfer market this summer and even some of the names available for transfer have not got him excited.

Pardew may opt to leave the No 9 shirt vacant and follow in the footsteps of Chris Hughton, who did so to good effect in 2009 before United sealed promotion.

The Chronicle understands French star Hatem Ben Arfa is keen to wear the No 9. However, Quinn feels the shirt must be treated with the respect it deserves, with the bearer following in the footsteps of not only himself but also Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand, Wor Jackie and Malcolm Macdonald to name but a few. …
