THE idea of Bowraville's Aboriginal community designing, making and marketing clothes as a way to create local employment is not new a in fact Auntie Ruth Walker has been coaxing it along for at least 20 years.

What is new is that it is now actually happening and includes people of all ages, all skills and all backgrounds.

The project is called MiiMi Creations and is a collaboration between Bowraville's MiiMi Aboriginal Corporation and Coffs Harbour TAFE's fashion design certificate students.

The students designed a range to meet the criteria aDesign a summer dress for MiiMia.

Auntie Ruth was then among the group which chose the garment that was to become the first for a 20-piece production run.

aIt's amazing to see this happening,a Auntie Ruth said.

aWe have the skills here to print and sew and sell and all together it will employ a lot of our young people.a

She said at the moment the students were women aged between 20 and 70 years but she hoped to get some young men on board soon. …
