A PENSIONER was caught hoarding a revolver inside a fruit machine in his kitchen.

When police raided the home of Malcolm Cruddas their attention was drawn to the gaming machine.

When they looked inside they found a gas revolver and 20 blank cartridges wrapped in a carrier bag concealed behind the fruit machine wheels.

Cruddas, 61, who is in poor health and has memory problems, said he had no recollection of the gun but his DNA was found on it.

Now a judge has suspended Cruddas' prison sentence after accepting he had been exploited by others.

Recorder Williams, at Newcastle Crown Court, told Cruddas: "You are a vulnerable person who was exploited.

"Clearly the police regarded you not as the prime suspect and the prime suspect has never been brought before the courts."

Officers had gone to Cruddas' home, on Armstrong Street, Bensham, Gateshead, in May last year.

Inside the fruit machine they found a ME38 compact gas revolver and the 9mm blank cartridges. …
