Experience Is So Crucial for Lilley; SNOOKER

Article excerpt

THE superior experience of Washington's David Lilley was the key to his victory over Anthony Parsons in the Lumley Moor Premier League.

With neither player competing to their full potential, and only two breaks of over 50 recorded in the match, Lilley held his nerve in the decider to claim the edge over Parsons.

Parsons started the better by taking the lowscoring opening two frames 53-32, 67-2, the first with a 27 clearance and the second with small runs of 25-26.

Having had little opportunity in the two previous frames, Lilley responded with an early 20 in the third and then added a 37 to clinch the frame 59-30.

He then went on to win the fourth 84-0 with a well-compiled 70, to take the match into the interval with the scores locked together at 2-2. With Parsons' game failing to improve, Lilley took his chance to make it three wins in a row after firing in a frame-winning 59 to claim the low-scoring fifth 68-3. In the scrappy sixth, a series of small runs in the teens topped by a 24 helped Parsons run away with the frame 70-12 to make the scores all square at 3-3. After squeezing home 42-40 in the next to get back in the driving seat, Lilley looked to be heading for a draw when trailing 48-29 in the decider with only three colours remaining.

However, after receiving five penalty points from a well-laid snooker, he then potted the blue, pink and black to wrap up the set 52-48 and the match 5-3. Lilley's five points puts him third place on the rankings leaderboard, five points behind front runner Michael Rhodes (26) and one point behind second-placed Sam Craigie (22), who has a game in hand on both players.

Next week's Premier League contest sees Tow Law's David Craggs taking on Skelton's Ritchie Beckham.

HORDEN'S Steve Wylie could only win the first and final frames of his Champions League clash with Belmont's Steve Armstrong. …
