Bottle shop boss goes behind bars

A BOTTLE-SHOP manager will spend five months behind bars after pleading guilty in the Maryborough Magistrates Court to unlicensed driving and speeding. The court heard John Galea, 47, was caught driving with a disqualified licence twice in two weeks and the second charge arose when he was clocked doing 55kmh in a 40kmh school zone on Kent St. He was less than a year into a four-year disqualification.

Magistrate John Smith noted Galea's poor traffic history which included a number of unlicensed driving convictions. He was sentenced to a total of 21 months imprisonment, his licence was disqualified for six years and he was fined $350 for speeding. He will be eligible for parole in November.

Bathtub crisis

A THREE-YEAR-OLD baby in Mundubbera nearly drowned when her mother temporarily left her unattended in a bathtub with her siblings.

It is believed the mother left the bathroom to get the child's pyjamas on Monday night, when the father came in and found the baby face-down in the bathtub. …
