WHEN Miranda Costello recently moved from a two-bedroom apartment to a five-bedroom house she had everything well planned in advance, but still found Moving Day an ordeal.

aIt was really stressful, even though I thought I was prepared,a Miranda said, aIt's a bit like getting ready for a birth; you can have a birthing plan, but it goes out the window on the day. You can be as prepared as you want to be, but you just have to roll with it on the day.a

Miranda thought she had plenty of time to prepare for the move.

aOur house settlement was over a hundred days and I started early, putting a spreadsheet together with all the critical dates. We began packing and tried to make do with the bare essentials. But the reality was, with 16-month old baby, it's hard to live with only the bare essentials. You can't pack up everything you need, and we were stumbling over boxes all the time.

aWe packed the precious stuff ourselves. I ended up as the main packer, because little hands like to get into boxes, so my husband would look after the baby. I thought we'd be close to ready by moving day, but the removalists came so early and they were already taking stuff out while we were still packing. And they take out things you hadn't expected them to. You turn around and it's gone. It's already in the van.

aBy the end of the day we'd only managed to unpack the beds. The boxes were everywhere and it was chaos at breakfast-time the next day. We had no food and no toiletries. We had to go out, and then trying to find local shops in our new neighbourhood was a problem.a

Move My Home asked Miranda what she'd do differently next time she moved.

aI probably would have taken the bare essential kitchen stuff for moving day, and some food. We had so many boxes for the kitchen, it took us two days to unpack. On moving day we didn't get to eat until 2pm, and your energy levels deplete really quickly. …
