Kilty Makes Up for Selection Woe; Olympic Qualifying Time Set

RICHARD KILTY may have been bypassed for an individual spot in the European Under-23 Championships, but he showed strength of character to put that behind him and scorch to a World and Olympic qualifying time in Switzerland at the weekend.

The Gateshead Harrier was slightly out of sorts at the Trials in Bedford where, in the 200 metres, he finished in third place in 21.16secs.

However, there was a suggestion by UKA officials that if he could get in a good performance before the team was finalised for the Czech Republic his name could be added. So, Kilty, who has no funding from the governing body or private sponsorship of any sort, paid his own way to La Chaux-de-Fouds, Switzerland to line-up in the Resisprint International against some of the leading sprinters in Europe.

And, while the trip itself was a huge success in that he ran 20.53secs and finished twohundredths-of-a-second behind Delhi Commonwealth champion Leon Baptiste, he quickly came down to earth when he was told that he wouldn't be included in the 200 metres at the European Under-23 Championships.

"It was a huge disappointment not to be added to the team for an individual place for the Czech Republic despite having already been named in the relay squad," said 21-year-old Kilty.

"I put my hand up in that I didn't run well in the trials - in fact it was probably my worst performance for a long time - but to go to Switzerland having been told by the team coaches that if I ran well there then I would get to run in the European's and then to be told I wasn't was a real let-down.

"And I gather other athletes went to Switzerland having been given the same information, but they also have not been added, so I'm not alone.

But, at the moment, I'm about the third fastest under-23 200 metre runner in Europe but I'm not going to the championships. …
