Wings over Bundy as Air Force Plane Lands; Upgrade Torunway Hascity in Thefiring Line

THE recent upgrade to Bundaberg Airport has drawn the city into a major military exercise off the east coast of Australia.

A RAAF C-17 transport aircraft landed at the airport on Thursday as part of preparations for Talisman Sabre 2011, a joint Australia-US exercise.

The C-17 is used to lift troops and cargo to operating bases.

Bundaberg Mayor Lorraine Pyefinch said nobody could remember anything larger than the C-17 ever landing in Bundaberg.

C[pounds sterling]It has only been possible because the runway was lengthened and strengthened during the upgrade,C[yen] Cr Pyefinch said.

C[pounds sterling]It would have been physically impossible to land anything that big before.C[yen]

Cr Pyefinch said it was pleasing to see the Defence Department had recognised the airport had the capacity to help out with Talisman Sabre 2011.

She was also happy at the size of the aircraft that could now use the runway.

C[pounds sterling]It's good from our point of view because we do charge landing fees based on the tonnage of the aircraft,C[yen] she said. …
