THE Chron's Mam of the Year awards are always an emotional affair.

Every entry we receive is a deserving cause and the judges have a truly difficult job to pick eight finalists and an even trickier task to select a final three.

It is a terrific day when a bunch of extraordinary mams who don't think they are doing anything out of the ordinary get the chance to feel very special for a day.

If replies from them are anything to go by, it did, indeed turn out to be a special day. Sheila Clark, who nominated her sister Joan Daglish, wrote: "I would like to thank you for recognising my amazing sister and making us the happiest we have been in a long time. This day will stay with us for a long time."

Third place Lillian Smith, a 91-year-old great-grandmother of 10, added: "A very, very big thank you to all of you for a super day. One day I'll come down from this high and be more normal again."

And runner-up Zilla Watson wrote: "We all thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.

It was a very relaxed atmosphere and it was lovely being spoilt for a few hours."

If ever there was a group of people who deserved a big day out it was the eight special ladies at last week's event. A METAPHORICAL bouquet goes to reporter Sara Nicol following an article about Kathleen Horseman, lollipop lady at Whytrig Middle School, in Seaton Delaval, who retired after 29 years.

Kathleen's sister Christine Nicholson wrote: "Thank you for the fantastic article. She was thrilled. Your paper cares about people and local issues. Continue your good work."

High praise indeed. Thanks, Christine.

And the good wishes keep on coming, this time for feature writer Francesca Craggs from Kenneth Robson at the Vi-Ability Youth Group.

He wrote: "It's nice to get some publicity as we normally just get on with things and think nothing of it, but to read the comments from the parents it makes it all even more worthwhile. …
