Newcastle Diamonds..................... 52 Edinburgh Monarchs ..................... 43 NEWCASTLE Diamonds have traditionally struggled to contain Edinburgh Monarchs at Brough Park, but they never looked back after a brilliant start last night, writes LAWRENCE HEPPELL.

Diamonds took to maximum heat wins in the first four races to go up 18-6 up.

In response the Edinburgh management placed Kevin Wolbert, on a tactical ride in heat five for double points.

The Diamonds' guest rider, Aaron Summers, restricted the tactical advantage to a 3-5 and move the score onto 21-11.

With a 4-2 in heat six, the 12-point gap allowed Edinburgh to use their second and final tactical ride for double points as early as heat seven with Andrew Tully the man on a mission. However, Kyle Newman tried a tight pass round Tully, but he overcooked it and ended up going over the handlebars. Thankfully Newman was not badly hurt.

In the re-run Tully jetted ahead with his partner Kalle Katajisto to take a solid lead for a doubled six points in a Monarchs' 1-8. Nedermark and Summers forced their way into the lead in the ninth, for a 5-1. Nedermark made a great first bend in heat 11 to lead, but come bend four Matthew Wethers shot round him, followed by Wolbert.

Sneddon shot ahead of Tully in the 12th as part of a shared race, maintaining the nine-point gap, while heat 13 saw Lyons seal the win on the night in the fastest time of the season at 62.2 seconds.
