STRICTLY KOSHER 9PM, ITV1 "Jewish people seem to have quite a lot of sex," remarks Joel Lever, proprietor of the Manchester frock emporium, Mon Amie Studio. "Because religious Jewish people don't have televisions." This is as pressing an argument for getting rid of your telly as I have heard in a while. But maybe hang on until the end of this lively documentary about Manchester's Jewish community, affectionately directed by Chris Malone and narrated by Miriam Margolyes.

BRITISH MASTERS 9PM, BBC4 "Don't be fooled by its charm," urges Dr James Fox, casting a withering glance at a bit of winsome soft porn by the Edwardian peddler of such stuff, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. "The truth is that it is really, really, really bad art. Reactionary, elitist, sexist... totally out of touch with the realities of modern Britain." This possibly tells us more about Dr James than it does about Alma-Tadema, which isn't always an endearing quality in a critic. …
