ICE CUBE IndigO2, SE10 WE'VE had Alice Cooper the golfer and Roger Daltrey the trout farmer, but Ice Cube the all-round family entertainer might be the most unlikely transformation in music.

The former chief lyricist of notorious hip-hop crew NWA, and the face of the equally notorious solo albums AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted and Death Certificate, he had no need to embark on a tour of UK clubs to plug an underwhelming album, I am the West, that came out nearly a year ago. Instead he could have made enjoyable reading material out of his bank statement, having lately had 90 episodes commissioned of Are We There Yet?, the cuddly US sitcom in which he is the recurring guest star and executive producer.

The series is a by-product of a successful Hollywood acting career, with hit franchises including Friday and Barbershop. So if he was here shouting timeworn expletives to 2,400 fans of vintage rap in a curfew-busting, back-to-basics show, it was because he really wanted to be. …
